"Is It Persecution?
W. H. Claxton, a Prominent Campbell County Republican, in Jail on a Serious Charge.
W. H. Claxton, a member of the Campbell County court, is occupying, along with several other people, a cell in the Knox County jail. He had a trial before United States Commissioner Carter Wednesday afternoon on the charge of holding an illegal election at Polteet's Gap, in the thirteenth district of Campbell County. Mr. Carter bound him over to the court in the sum of $500. He will make his bond probably today and will, of course, be set at liberty.
His accuser is 'Squire Hunter, Postmaster at Jacksboro." The article goes on to say Hunter is a Democrat, and may have been politically motivated. Claxton is quoted as saying, "God knows we did not intend to violate the election laws, and the prosecution is nothing more than a scheme to make political capital."

"Chattanooga, Tenn., June 2 - (Special) - A special from Huntsville, Scott county, says Judge William Claxton, of Campbell county, was killed by some unknown parties on the headwaters of Rockhouse fork at the foot of Braden mountain, in Scott county, this morning. It is generally believed that the murder was the outcome of a feud between the Hughetts and Claxtons of that neighborhood. It seems that Claxton had shot and killed Elswick Hughett from ambush not very far from the same spot about two months ago. Claxton was a justice of the peace in Campbell county at the time, and was under bond at Huntsville on a charge of having taken part in the lynching of William Murphy, a little over a year ago.
It is generally believed that this is not the end of the matter. Claxton's brothers [Caswell, 31, and James, 26] say that Henry Hughett, brother of Elswick Hughett, is the murderer.
It seems Claxton had killed Hughett for testifying that he (Claxton) had made in criminating statements about participating in the lynching of Murphy. It is thought the feud will end in the extermination of the parties."

Headline: "Shot From Ambush. Result of a Kentucky [Tennessee] Feud - More Trouble Expected to Ensue."
"Knoxville, Tenn., June 3, 1897 - A Special to the Sentinel from Huntsville, Tenn. says: Squire William Claxton of Campbell county was shot from ambush and killed by an unknown party yesterday afternoon at the foot of Braden mountain. Constable Pollmore, who was with Claxton, is reported to have taken to his heels. The affair, it is understood, grew out of a feud between Claxton and the Hughetts of that neighborhood. Claxton shot Elsewick Hughett from ambush in the same neighborhood about two months ago. Claxton was indicted and under bond for the murder of William Murphy, by lynching, and was also under bond for killing Hughett. The Claxtons, it is thought, will accuse Henry Hughett of the killing of William Claxton, and more trouble is expected."

[1, 3, 13, 14] - In the 1900 Census, Mary Ann Moore Claxton was widowed. She had born a total of 9 children, 7 of which were then living - Lonnie B., 19; Luther Martin, 16; Henrietta, 12; John L., 10; Calley, 7; Michel L., 5; William H., 2. Two other unknown children must have been born and died between her marriage in 1881 and the census in 1900.
In the 1910 Census, Mary Ann Moore Claxton Tye is married to H. C. Tye - married in 1909. The 5 Tye children, ages 22-13, living with them are from H. C. Tye's first marriage. There are 3 Claxton children living with them, step-children to H. C. Tye - Norma, 27; Mike L., 15; Dewy, 7. In this census, Mary Ann has had a total of 10 children, 7 of which are living. Thus between 1900 and 1910, she had one more child, and one more died. The differences between these two census reports raises several questions.
Dewy (1910 Census) was born about 1903 by an unknown father between Mary Ann's first husband's death and her second marriage. Dewy would account for the increase from 9 total children in 1900 to 10 in 1910.
Calley (1900 Census) is not in the 1910 Census and I could not find any later records of her. Therefore she may have died between 1900 and 1910, and with Dewy's birth, would account for the same number of living children for Mary Ann in 1900 and 1910.
If Lonnie B. (1900 Census) and Norma (1910 Census) are the same person, then the total number and living number of children in each census are correct, as there are 7 living children accounted for in each census. Sources indicate they were born in February in 1881 and February 1880. If they are two different children, then the children numbers for Mary Ann are wrong in both census. I could not find any records of Lonnie other than the 1900 Census. I did find Norma's death certificate in 1942 when she was married to Jim Vinsant (marriage date unknown). The only other possible records of Norma found are (1) Normon (Norma?) Claxton, female, marrying E. Mc Homes in Campbell Co., TN on 20 Mar 1911, and (2) Norma Neal, age 35, married to George Neal in the 1920 Census in Campbell Co., TN, on the same page with the Cash and Mandie Claxton family.

Luther [CLAXTON] looks like his father and my brother Buford Jr. I only knew of Mike and John. Mike died when I was 4. My dad pass alway in 1998. Tell Elizabeth that Buford had 11 children and all of us are still living. I have a young siste whom lives in Richmond Ky. Do you have any other information on any of Luther Brothers or Sisters.
