Notes:
1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. In November, North Carolina created a state constitution.

1776 - On 12 November, the Washington District of North Carolina was formed.

1777 - Washington County (NC) was formed from a portion of the Washington District.

1778 - On 5 April, North Carolina was the 10th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1779 - Sullivan County (NC) formed from a portion of Washington County.

1783 - Greene County (NC) and Davidson County (NC) were both formed from portions of Washington County.

1784 - On 2 June, North Carolina ceded its Western Territory to the Federal Government.

1784 - On 23 August, Washington County, Greene County and Sullivan County formed the provisional State of Franklin.

1784 - In November, North Carolina repealed cession of the Western Territory to the Federal Government.

1785 - The State of Franklin formed 4 new counties: Caswell County and Sevier County both from portions of Greene County and "Indian Lands"; Spencer County from portions of Greene County and Sullivan County; Wayne County from portions of Washington County and Wilkes County.

1786 - Blount County (Franklin) formed from Indian Lands.

1786 - North Carolina reconstituted its government in Greene County, Sullivan County and Washington County, which functioned in parallel with the State of Franklin's in those counties.

1787 - Hawkins County (NC) formed from a portion of Sullivan County, which functioned in parallel with State of Franklin's Spencer County.

1787 - Sumner County (NC) formed from a portion of Davidson County.

1787 - North Carolina's county governments gained supremacy over the State of Franklin's government.

1788 - Tennessee County (NC) formed from a portion of Davidson County.

1788 - North Carolina gained supremacy over the State of Franklin. Franklin and it's counties of Caswell, Blount, Sevier, Spencer and Wayne became extinct.

1789 - On 21 November, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1790 - On 26 May, North Carolina again ceded the Western Territory to the Federal Government. The United States Congress established a territorial government called "Territory of the United States South of the River Ohio", better known as the Southwest Territory. It was essentially the land area that later became the State Tennessee. There were 2 unconnected districts. The Western District in the northeast part of the territory, included the countires of Washington, Sullivan, Greene and Hawkins. The Meto District, surrounding Nashville, included the counties of Davidson, Sumner and Tennessee. The remainder of the territory was controlled by Indians.

1793 - The Hamilton District in the Southwest Territory was created from the southwest portion of the Western District. It included the new counties of Jefferson and Knox, both formed from portions of Greene County and Hawkins County.

1794 - Sevier County formed from a portion of Jefferson County, Hamilton District, Southwest Territory.

1795 - Blount County formed from a portion of Knox County, Hamilton District, Southwest Territory.

1796 - On 1 June, Tennessee became the 16th state in the United States of America, with the 11 counties that were in the Southwest Territory.
