    • The 1091 acres were located among the branches of Mehixon Creek in the Pamunkey Neck, which became King William County in 1702. This land was subsequently sold on 4 Jan 1702/3 to Thomas BRADLEY by William's son, Anthony WINSTON Sr., as heir to William after his death.

    • (1) The 24 Oct 1701 New Kent County land grant, with a 15 Apr 1701 court order, to Anthony WINSTON Sr., says the 1079 acres were deserted by William WINSTON I. It does not say he was deceased. (2) In 1702 he received a deed for 430 acres in King William County from Charles Fleming to secure money due WINSTON. (3) On 4 Jan 1702/3 Anthony WINSTON Sr. sold 1091 acres in New Kent County that he inherited from his father. In this record of sale, William is referred to as deceased.

Based on this data, I think his death occurred between 24 Oct 1701 and 4 Jan 1703.

    • William had at least 4 headrights to patent land and Sarah had at least 1, indicating the number of trips each took from England to Virginia to qualify for the headrights. Therefore, various scenarios are possible as to whether they were born and/or married in England or Virginia. Headrights have not been found for their children, and thus they are assumed to have been born in Virginia. Their marriage date is an estimate based on the estimated birth dates of their children. - W. Winston COCHRANE IV, 2013 [1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 19]

William WINSTON I was given a land grant of 266 acres in St. Peter's Parish
    • The grant states that this is the land "on which said Winston dwells", being a part of a patent granted to Moses DAVIS together with a parcel of land purchased by said WINSTON of David CRAWFORD, adjoining the lands of John  LEWIS, David CRAWFORD and George PHILLIPS. This land is now in St. Paul's Parish, created in 1704, and in Hanover County, created in 1720, It is located on the south side of the Pamunkey River near the colonial town of Newcastle, which was plotted in 1738 and died out circa 1811. Newcastle was just southeast of where present day highway US 360 crosses the river.

The progression of ownership of this WINSTON "homestead" was as follows:
William WINSTON I - acquired by land grant, 1687
Anthony WINSTON, Sr. - inherited from his father circa 1703
William "Carpenter" WINSTON - inherited from his father circa 1718
John SYME II - purchased from William "Carpenter" WINSTON, a cousin of SYME's mother, Sarah WINSTON, circa 1768

  • Notes
    • The earliest known records of a WINSTON in Virginia, is a William WINSTON in two York County records in 1666 - in a land grant on 24 Aug, and as a witness to a will on 21 Sep. There are no further records of him in York County, and no known records to allow determination of a relationship to the William WINSTON I, married to Sarah in New Kent County, whose earliest record is in 1685, nineteen years later. On 16 Oct 1685, William WINSTON I and two others were granted 1500 acres on Mangohick Creek, presently in King William County, by the Pamunkey Indian Council. However the two counties are very close to each other, and the possibility exists that they are the same person. Also, there are no known records to allow determination of the ancestral home in England of the WINSTON(s) that immigrated to Virginia in the 1600s.

At the time of his death, William WINSTON I had amassed over 7,600 acres of land grants from the Virginia colony in New Kent County and in King and Queen County. The areas in these counties later became Hanover County and King William County respectively. His holdings may have been greater from land purchases from other individuals, but these records in both counties have been lost to fires.
