Notes Family Event:
- "The Russells would get together every Christmas, exchange gifts and have a big dinner. They took turns which home and town they would go to. I remember I would have to sleep between two fat aunts in one bed and I did not like that.
"Every summer (around July 4th) they would go fishing together at different lakes. One summer I got burned on my stomach by a firecracker or Roman Candle due to their carelessness. Another fishing trip Virginia and I were in a boat with our Dad [Walter Scott RUSSELL] and two other uncles around midnight when one uncle flipped a fish right in my lap. I nearly fell out of the boat. Last time I went with them.
"One time Uncle Charlie [Charles OTT] and Aunt Myrtle [Myrtle RUSSELL OTT] were visiting us on Cherry Street in Olathe and we were waiting on my Dad to come home from the store so we could go to eat. Uncle Charlie was tired of waiting and went outside and made a hog calling noise that would put your ears out of order. Here came Dad down the street. Said he heard someone calling pigs when he turned the corner on Cherry Street.
"The Russells went on buying trips for their stores in the summer. They would order Christmas things on these trips. I remember going to St. Louis, MO and riding one of the big boats down the Mississippi River. I must have been about 8-10 years old. Had a good time!"
- Lucille Maxine RUSSELL MELTON, June 2001
Residence:
- Moved from Rogersville, TN.
- In total, John Russell was farming 634 acres, almost a whole section of land which is a square mile, and one of the highest acerage of the farms in Eudora Towhship. Based on a plat book, most of the individual acreages owned were 150 acres or smaller. Thus he was most likely farming several small farms owned by others.
The 1915 Kansas state census taken on 1 March lists the following information on his farming:
- Acres sown in the fall of 1914: 230 acres of winter wheat, 100 acres of corn, 45 acres of oates
- Acres under cultivation: 4 of timothy, 30 of alfalfa, 70 of hay, with 60 tons of hay cut in 1914
- Corn on hand - 850 bushels
- Produced in the last 12 months: 200 pounds of butter, $50 worth of poultry and eggs, $500 worth of cattle sold
- Animals on hand: 9 horses, 5 mules, 3 milk cows, 24 cattle, 40 pigs, 1 dog
Family Event:
"Mr. and Mrs. Guy Russell and Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Russell and Ella Marie motored to Lawrence Sunday and visited Mr. Russell's parents [John and Martha Russell]. They had to abandon the car on the return trip on account of the mud."
- Osawatomie (Kansas) Graphic, 24 May 1917, p. 6, col. 3.- Included were their 12 living children, 5 daughters-in-law, a son-in-law and 6 grandchildren. At the time, a son, a son-in-law and a grandchild were deceased. John was 62 and Martha was 53.
"The children of Mr. and Mrs. John Russell very pleasently surprised them by coming Sunday with well filled baskets and spent the day with them. Twenty-six were present for the day. In the afternoon A. Lawrence, the photographer of Lawrence came out and took a family group picture. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Bert Russell and family [sons Cecil and Bert, Jr.] of Paola; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Russell and baby [son Roy]; and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Russell of Wellsville; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Russell and baby [daughter Marie] of Osawatomie; Miss Katie Russell of Kansas City [MO]; Mrs. Lillie Bryan and daughters [Helen and Bessie] of Lawrence; and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Russell; Myrtle, Ernest, Ray and Grace Russell; and Mr. and Mrs. John Russell, all of this place [community of Belleview in Eudora Township, Douglas County, KS]."
- Lawrence (Kansas) Daily Journal-World, 5 October 1917, p. 6, col. 4.
Included in the picture, but not mentioned in the newspaper article, were Mr. and Mrs. William Brecheisen of Johnson County, KS. Mrs. Brecheisen was John and Martha Russell's daughter, Mabel Russell.
- "The Russells would get together every Christmas, exchange gifts and have a big dinner. They took turns which home and town they would go to. I remember I would have to sleep between two fat aunts in one bed and I did not like that.
