was a Revolutionary War hero [1] |
- On 7 Oct 1780, a key battle in the Revolutionary War was fought at King's Mountain in South Carolina, just south of the North Carolina border. Major WINSTON along with 7 other officers of similar rank, led 1,400 men in the defeat of British Major Patrick FERGUSON who was leading 900 Americans loyal to England. The battle lasted just 65 minutes, being completed before British General CORNWALLIS, in nearby Charlotte, NC, could reinforce FERGUSON. This was the first major victory against the British in the southern states, and caused CORNWALLIS to cancel a campaign in North Carolina . Instead, he retreated from Charlotte back to South Carolina. This loss was the beginning of the end, and CORNWALLIS surrendered at Yorktown, VA 12 months later.
Major WINSTON's last action in the battle of Guilford Courthouse in Greensboro, NC on 15 Mar 1781, was also successful. His remains were moved to the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, and a statue of him was erected there.
