- "It would be difficult to find a family that has played a more important part in the settlement of the County than the first immigrant, Vincent Hobbs of 1735, from England. The family is of old English Stock with honors back of it."

Residence:
- In 1748 this area became apart of the new Washington County.
- Having moved from Maryland, they settled just upstream from the famous Mendota bend (36°41'54" N, 082°18'59" W) in the river, between the southeast side of Clinch Mountain and the river, where they farmed. They acquired 572 acres over the next 2 years adjacent to their son-in-law, John Benham, husband of their daughter Mary.
- They moved here from their farm on the North Fork of the Holston River. This location is now the town of Dryden in Lee County, Virginia.
Land:
- He sold some of this land to John ANGLE, 98 acres to Edmond PENDLETON and 225 acres to William MUNCEY, on 13 September 1796.
