Notes:
1692 - Essex County and Richmond County were formed from the Old Rappahannock county in the Colony of Virginia, England, and the Old Rappahannock County became extinct. The Old Rappahannock County records were transferred to Essex County. Old Rappahannock County was formed from Lancaster County in 1656.

1707 - On 1 May, England became a part of the UK.

1721 - Spotsylvania County formed from portions of Essex County, King and Queen County and King William County.

1728 - Caroline County formed from portions of Essex County, King and Queen County and King William County, creating Essex County's present day boundries.

1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from the UK. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.
