Notes:
1745 - Augusta County formed from part of Orange County in the Colony of Virginia, UK, with an undefined western border.

1770 - Botetourt County was formed from the southern part of Augusta County.

1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from the UK. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1776 - Monongalia County, Ohio County and Yohogania County (ceded to Pennsylvania in 1786) were formed from western Augusta County.

1778 - Rockingham County and Illinois County (abolished in 1784) were formed from parts of Augusta County.

1778 - Rockbridge County formed from parts of Augusta County and Botetourt County.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1788 - Pendleton County was formed from parts of Augusta County, Hardy County and Rockingham County.

1791 - Bath County formed from parts of Augusta County, Botetourt County and Greenbrier County.

1948 - Waynesboro incorporated as a separate city from Augusta County.

1960 - Staunton incorporated as a separate city from Augusta County, creating Augusta County's present day boundries.
