Notes:
1796 - Grainger County was formed from portions of Hawkins County and Knox County, in Tennessee, USA.

1797 - The town of Rutledge was established, and it became the county seat of Grainger County in 1801.

1801 - Claiborne County formed from portions of Grainger County and Hawkins County.

1850 - Union County formed from portions of Grainger County, Anderson County, Knox County, Campbell County and Claiborne County.

1870 - Hamblen County formed from portions of Grainger County, Hawkins County and Jefferson County.

1930-1960 - Grainger County received land from Union County, creating Grainger County's present day boundries.
