Notes:
1753 - Rowan County was formed from a portion of Anson County, Province of North Carolina, UK.

1770 - Guilford County formed from portions of Rowan County and Orange County, and Surry County formed from a portion of Rowan County.

1773 - Surry County received land from Rowan County.

1776 - In November, North Carolina created a constitution, separating it from the UK.

1777 - Burke County formed from a portion of Rowan County.

1789 - On 21 November, North Carolina became a state in the United States of America by ratifying the US Constitution.

1788 - Iredell County formed from a portion of Rowan County.

1822 - Davidson County formed from a portion of Rowan County.

1836 - Davie County formed from a portion of Rowan County, creating Rowan County's present day boundries.
