Notes:
1681 - On 28 February, Charles II of England granted a land charter to William Penn and named it the Pennsylvania Colony.

1682 - William Penn laid out Philadelphia, in Philadelphia County, to be the capital of the Pennsylvania Colony.

1707 - England became part of the UK.

1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress, in Philadelphia. Philadelphia was one of several capitals of the United States during the Revolutionary War.

1778 - On 5 March, Pennsylvania was the 8th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1787 - The Constitution Convention was held in Philkadelphia, and on 12 December, Pennsylvania became the 2nd state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1790 - Philadelphia served as the capital of the United States until 1800 while Washington, DC was being built.
