Notes:
1691 - France built a fort at present day Peoria named Fort St. Louis II, with a surrounding community.

1763 - Great Britian takes control of the territory east of the Mississippi River.

1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from Great Britain. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1778 - Virginia claimed present day Illinois as a county of Virginia.

1783 - Virginia ceded Illinois to the Federal Government, and it became part of the Northwest Territory.

1800 - The Indiana Territory was formed from the Northwest Territory.

1801 - St. Clair County received land from Knox County, and unicorporated land which included the city of Peoria.

1809 - The Illinois Territory was organized from the Indiana Territory.

1812 - Madison County was formed from portions of St. Clair County and Randolph County.

1818 - On 3 December, Illinois became the 21st state in the United States of America.

1821 - Pike County was formed from portions of Madison County, Bond County and Clark County.

1822 - A portion of Pike County became unincorporated, which included the city of Perioa.

1825 - Peoria County was formed from a portion of Fulton County and unincorporated land, and the city of Peoria became the county seat for Peoria County.
