Notes:
1614 - The Dutch began building forts in New Netherlands, which covered the future states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, and parts of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
1664 - England took control of New Netherlands.
1673 - The Dutch re-took control of New Netherlands, and established three counties on the present day Delaware River: Upland County in present day Pennsylvania, and New Amstel County and Hoarkill County, both in present day Delaware.
1674 - The Dutch ceded New Netherlands to the English.
1681 - On 28 February, Charles II of England granted a land charter to William Penn and named it the Pennsylvania Colony. Upland County established by the Dutch was now in Pennsylvania, and was renamed Chester County.
1707 - England became part of the UK.
1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.
1778 - On 5 March, Pennsylvania was the 8th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.
1787 - On 12 December, Pennsylvania became the 2nd state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.
