Notes:
1636 - New Norfolk County was formed from a portion of Elizabeth City County, Colony of Virginia, England. Elizabeth City County was one of the origianal eight counties in Virginia.

1637 - New Norfolk County was split into Upper Norfolk County and Lower Norfolk County, and New Norfolk County became extinct.

1645 - Upper Norfolk County was renamed Nansemond County.

1691 - Lower Norfolk County was split into Norfolk County and Princess Anne County, and Lower Norfolk County became extinct.

1707 - On 1 May, England became a part of the UK.

1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from the UK. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1845 - Norfolk was incorporated as a city separate from Norfolk County.

1858 - Portsmouth was incorporated as a city separate from Norfolk County.

1910 - Suffolk City incorporated as a city separate from Nansemond County.

1921 - South Norfolk was incorporated as a city separate from Norfolk County.

1963 - Chesapeake was incorporated as a new city, replacing both Norfolk County and the City of South Norfolk, both of which became extinct.

1972 - Nansemond City incorporated as a city replacing Nansemond County, and Nansemond County became extinct.

1974 - Nansemond City merged into Suffolk City, and Nansemond City became extinct.
