Notes:
1614 - The Dutch began building forts in New Netherlands, which covered the future states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, and parts of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

1664 - England took control of New Netherlands, and remaned it the Province of New York.

1673 - The Dutch re-took control of the Province of New York.

1674 - The Dutch ceded the Province of New York back to the English.

1683 - The first 12 counties were formed in the state of New York: Albany County, Cornwall County, Dukes County, Dutchess County, Kings County, New York County, Orange County, Queens County, Richmond County, Suffolk County, Ulster County and Westchester County.

1707 - On 1 May, England became a part of the UK.

1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - New York created a state constitution.

1778 - On 6 February, New York was the 3rd state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1788 - On 26 July, New York became the 11th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.
