1826 - Laurel County formed from portions of Clay County, Whitley County, Knox County and Rockcastle County.

1839 - Breathitt County formed from portions of Clay County, Estill County and Perry County.

1843 - Owsley County formed from portions of Clay County, Estill County and Breathitt County. Perry County received land from Clay County.

1850 - Clay County and Perry County exchanged land.

1852 - Harlan County received land from Clay County.

1858 - Jackson County formed from Clay County, Estill County, Laurel County, Rockcastle County, Owsley County and Madison County. Clay County received land from Perry County.

1878 - Leslie County formed from Clay County and Perry County, creating Clay County's present day boundries.
