Notes:
1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from Great Britain. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1777 - Kentucky County was formed from a portion of Fincastle County, Virginia.

1780 - Kentucky County was divided into Fayette County, Jefferson County and Lincoln County, and Kentucky County became extinct.

1785 - Nelson County formed from a portion of Jefferson County.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1792 - On June 1, the Commonwealth of Kentucky became the 15th state in the United States of America, with the following nine counties that were formerly in Virginia: Bourbon, Fayette, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Mason, Mercer, Nelson and Woodford.

1792 - Shelby County formed from a portion of Jefferson County.

1797 - Bullitt County formed from portions of Jefferson County and Nelson County.

1811 - Bullitt County received land from Jefferson County.

1824 - Oldham County formed from portions of Jefferson County, Henry County and Shelby County.

1874 - Oldham County received land from Jefferson County, creating Jefferson County's present day boundries.
