Notes:
1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from the UK. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1778 - Greenbrier County was formed from portions of Botetourt County and Montgomery County in the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1789 - Kanawha County formed from a portion of Greenbrier County.

1791 - Bath County formed from portions of Greenbrier County, Augusta County and Botetrout County.

1799 - Monroe County formed from a portion of Greenbrier County.

1818 - Nicholas County formed from portions of Greenbrier County and Kanawha County.

1831 - Fayette County formed from portions of Greenbrier County, Kanawha County and Logan County.

1863 - During the US Civil War, an area of western Virginia, including Greenbrier County and all the counties listed above, that sided with the North as opposed to Virginia, applied to Congress for admission into the Union as a separate state from Virginia. Congress approved the request with one condition, that the new state abolish slavery. President Lincoln signed the West Virginia statehood bill and on June 20, 1863, West Virginia became a state in the United States of America.

1871 - Summers County formed from portions of Greenbrier County, Fayette County and Mercer County.

1882 - Webster County received portions of Greenbrier County and Nicholas County, creating Greenbrier County's present day boundries.
