Notes:
1803 - The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, which included present day northeastern Colorado.

1848 - At the end of the Mexican-American War, the United States acquired northern Mexico, which included southern and western present day Colorado.

1855 - Arapahoe County was formed from unincorporated land in the western portion of the Kansas Territory.

1858 - The City of Denver was founded in Arapahoe County.

1861 - The Territory of Colorado was organized from the western portion of the former Kansas Territory after the eastern portion became the state of Kansas. The Territory of Colorado included Arapahoe County.

1876 - On 1 August, Colorado became the 38th state in the United States of America.

1902 - Arapahoe County became extinct, and was divided into Adams County, South Arapahoe County and the combined City-County of Denver.
