1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from Great Britain. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1777 - Kentucky County was formed from a portion of Fincastle County, Virginia.

1780 - Kentucky County was divided into Fayette County, Jefferson County and Lincoln County, and Kentucky County became extinct.

1781 - Cumberland Ford was founded at the Wilderness Trail crossing of the Cumberland River, in Lincoln County, Virginia.

1786 - Madison County and Mercer County were both formed from portions of Lincoln County.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1792 - On June 1, the Commonwealth of Kentucky became the 15th state in the United States of America, with the following nine counties that were formerly in Virginia: Bourbon, Fayette, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Mason, Mercer, Nelson and Woodford.

1799 - Knox County was formed from a portion of Lincoln County.

1867 - Josh Bell County was formed from portions of Knox County and Harlan County.

1870 - The city of Cumberland Ford was renamed Pineville.

1871 - Josh Bell County received land from Whitley County.

1873 - The city of Pineville was incorporated.

1873 - Josh Bell County was renamed Bell County.
