Notes:
1663 - A charter was issued to eight English noblemen for the Province of Carolina, England.
1664 - Albemarle County and Clarendon County (became extinct in 1667) were created.
1670 - Albemarle County was subdivided into four precincts: Shaftesbury, Currituck, Pasquotank and Berkerley.
1685 - Shaftesbury Precinct was renamed Chowan Precinct.
1689 - Albemarle County becomes extinct, and its precincts continue to function as precincts.
1707 - On 1 May, England became a part of the UK.
1712 - The Province of Carolina was split into the Province of North Carolina and the Province of South Carolina.
1722 - Bertie Precinct formed from a portion of Chowan Precinct.
1729 - Tyrrell Precinct formed from portions of Chowan Precinct, Bertie Precinct, Currituck Precinct and Pasquotank Precinct.
1739 - All Precincts become Counties.
1759 - Hertford County formed from portions of Chowan County, Bertie County and Northamption County.
1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. In November, North Carolina created a state constitution.
1778 - On 5 April, North Carolina was the 10th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.
1778 - Gates County formed from portions of Chowan County, Hertford County and Perquimans County, creating the present day boundries of Chowan County.
1789 - On 21 November, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.
