Notes:
1793 - The town of Cape Girardeau was established in the Louisiana Territory, Spain.

1800 - Spain ceded the Louisiana Territory to France.

1803 - The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, which included present day Missouri.

1805 - The Missouri Territory was established and 5 districts were formed: Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, St. Charles, St. Louis and St. Genevieve.

1808 - The town of Cape Girardeau was incorporated.

1812 - After Louisiana became a state, the remaining territory of the Louisiana Purchase was renamed the Missouri Territory, and the 5 original districts in the Missouri Territory became counties.

1821 - On 10 August, Missouri became the 24th state in the United States of America. The remainder of the Missouri Territory became an unorganized territory.



The present day city of Cape Girardeau is located in both Cape Girardeau County and Scott County in Missouri.
