1712 - The Province of Carolina was split into the Province of North Carolina and the Province of South Carolina.

1764 - Brunswick County was formed from portions of New Hanover County and Bladen County, in North Carolina, UK.

1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. In November, North Carolina created a state constitution.

1778 - On 5 April, North Carolina was the 10th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1789 - On 21 November, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1808 - Columbus County formed from portions of Brunswick County and Bladen County.

1811 - Columbus County received land from Brunswick County.

1877 - Columbus County received land from Brunswick County, creating Brunswick County's present day boundries.
