Notes:
1614 - The Dutch began building forts in New Netherlands, which covered the future states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, and parts of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

1646 - The town of Breuckelen was founded by the Dutch in New Netherlands.

1664 - England took control of New Netherlands, and remaned it the Province of New York. The town of Breuckelen was renamed Brooklyn.

1673 - The Dutch re-took control of the Province of New York.

1674 - The Dutch ceded the Province of New York back to the English.

1683 - Kings County was formed as one of the original 12 counties in the Province of New York, and the county included six towns: Gravesend, Brooklyn, Flatlands, Flatbush, New Utrecht and Bushwick.

1707 - On 1 May, England became a part of the UK.

1776 - On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - New York created a state constitution.

1778 - On 6 February, New York was the 3rd state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1788 - On 26 July, New York became the 11th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1834 - The City of Brooklyn was formed.

1854 - The towns of Bushwik and Williamsburgh in Kings County were incorporated into the City of Brooklyn.

1886 - Between 1886 and 1896 the City of Brooklyn annexed the remaining towns in Kings County, which created Brooklyn's present day boundries.

1898 - On 1 January, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island all combined to form the present day New York City, with each maintaining their individual status as a borough. Manhattan and The Bronx were in New York County, Brooklyn in Kings County with the same boundries, Queens in Queens County with the same boundries, and Staten Island in Richmond County with the same boundries.

1914 - Bronx County was established with the same boundries as the borough of The Bronx, leaving New York County with only Manhattan.
