Notes:
1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from the UK. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.
1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.
1777 - Kentucky County was formed from a portion of Fincastle County, Virginia.
1780 - Kentucky County was divided into Fayette County, Jefferson County and Lincoln County, and Kentucky County became extinct.
1786 - Bourbon County formed from a portion of Fayette County.
1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.
1789 - Mason County formed from a portion of Bourbon County.
1792 - On June 1, the Commonwealth of Kentucky became a state in the United States of America, with the following nine counties that were formerly in Virginia: Bourbon, Fayette, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Mason, Mercer, Nelson and Woodford.
1793 - Clark County formed from portions of Bourbon County and Fayette County.
1794 - Harrison County formed from portions of Bourbon County and Scott County.
1798 - Clark County received land from Bourbon County.
1800 - Nicholas County formed from portions of Bourbon County and Mason County.
1817 - Nicholas County received land from Bourbon County, creating Bourbon County's present day boundries.
