Notes:
1776 - On 29 June, Virginia became the Commonwealth of Virginia with its own Constitution, independent from Great Britain. On 4 July, the Declaration of Independence of the 13 colonies as the United States of America, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

1777 - On 16 December, Virginia was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America.

1777 - Kentucky County was formed from a portion of Fincastle County, Virginia.

1780 - Kentucky County was divided into Fayette County, Jefferson County and Lincoln County, and Kentucky County became extinct.

1786 - Madison County and Mercer County were both formed from portions of Lincoln County.

1788 - On 25 June, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America.

1800 - Knox County was formed from a portion of Lincoln County, Kentucky, USA.

1805 - Knox County received land from Madison County.

1807 - Clay County formed from portions of Knox County, Floyd County and Madison County. Knox County received land from Madison County.

1810 - Rockcastle County formed from portions of Knox County, Pulaski County, Lincoln County and Madison County.

1812 - Barbourville was established as a city, and is the county seat of Knox County.

1818 - Whitley County formed from a portion of Knox County.

1819 - Harlan County formed from a portion of Knox County.

1820 - Knox County and Harlan County exchanged land.

1826 - Laurel County formed from a portion of Knox County, Whitley County, Clay County and Rockcastle County.

1834 - Laurel County received land from Knox County.

1838 - Knox County received land from Harlan County.

1867 - Josh Bell County (renamed Bell County in 1873) formed from portions of Knox County and Harlan County, creating Knox County's present day boundries.
