  	An English royal charter in 1693 established William and Mary University at Williamsburg in the Colony of Virginia. Since both the colonies of Virginia and Maryland would be financially supporting the university with a tax on exported tobacco, residents of both colonies would be able to attend William and Mary. In 1694, the governor of Maryland requested the William and Mary Chancellor and head of the Church of England in America, "The Rt. Rev. Father in God, Henry, Lord Bishop of London", to provide a schoolmaster for their planned preparatory school. The Bishop selected Andrew GEDDES and requested the Admiralty Board in London to arrange ship passage for him to Virginia.

  	When Andrew GEDDES arrived in the Colony of Maryland to become the schoolmaster at their preparatory school for William and Mary University, there apparently wasn't a lot of interest in actually establishing the school. So on the 30th of September, 1696, the Upper House of the Maryland General Assembly recorded: "It being recomended that some Encouragement be given Mr Gaddas, the Schole Mastr sent in by his Lordsp the Bishop of London. The house desire his Excy will appoint him to read prayers in some Parish where no minister is Collated and that he may receive a Sallary therefore out of the 40l of tobo p poll, not exceeding 10000l tobo p Annur Sent to his Excellency." Then on the 3rd of June, 1697, the Upper House of the Maryland General Assembly recorded: " The house are made acquanited that Mr Geddes the School master sent in is placed out as vnder master to the Colledge Schoole in Virga to save a present charge & to gaine himselfe the more experience against the schole is here built." In other words, the Colony of Maryland did not want to keep paying him until their school was built, so he was sent to teach at William and Mary.

  	Role: Deceased Mongo INGLES became his security. INGLES was a fellow Scotsman, educated at the University of Edinburgh, and hired in 1694 as the Grammer Schoolmaster at William and Mary University when it was being formed. He was obviously friends with Andrew GEDDES, who was an Under Master at William and Mary beginning in 1697. "Bond. John Geddes of James City Co gent & Marcy Ingles of York Co are firmly bound to the justices of York Co for 10,000 lbs of good sweet scented tobacco . . . the condition of this obligation is such that whereas the sd John Geddes obtained a commission of administration of ye estate of Andrew Geddes, if the sd John Geddes do present to ye justices a true inventory of sd estate & satisfy all debts that remain due, & make a just account of the surplusage & deliver the same to the justices for the use of such persons to whom of right itt shall belong, & save harnless & indemnify the sd justices from all damages then this obligation to be void . . . Ackn 24 May 1698 in court. Wit: Willm Sedgwick, Henry Watkins. Attest: Willm Sedgwick clerk." - York County, Virginia, Deeds, Orders, Wills, Etc., 1698-1700, p 16-17. "An inventory of ye estate of ANDREW GEDDIS decd of York Co as itt was appraised by Willm Hayes & Willim Kenly in James City Co. Wearing apparell, books, money. [Not totaled] John  Geddis. The appraisal of John Geddis was sworne by me. Phill Lightfoot. Presented in court 26 Sep 1698 & ordered recorded. Attest: Willm Sedgwick clerk." - York County, Virginia, Deeds, Orders, Wills, Etc., 1698-1700, p 37.
