Tuscarawas County, located in northeast Ohio, already had many immigrants from Switzerland and Germany, with several churches and newspapers using the German language. On 24 July 1845, John I purchased a 50 acre farm (part of the SW quarter of the NW quarter of Sec 12, TS 7, RG 2) near the town of New Philadelphia in Warwick Township, that was worth $700 in 1850.
