  	It is unknown if Jacob and Elizabeth's first child, Ann Mary, born in 1844 in Switzerland, died before or after they immigrated. Tuscarawas County, located in northeast Ohio, already had many immigrants from Switzerland and Germany, with several churches and newspapers using the German language. On 24 July 1845, John I purchased a 50 acre farm (part of the SW quarter of the NW quarter of Sec 12, TS 7, RG 2) near the town of New Philadelphia in Warwick Township, that was worth $700 in 1850. On 6 December 1845, he sold 21 acres of this farm to two of his sons, John II and Nicholas, who then, 5 years later, sold it back to their father on 20 December 1850.
