Tuscarawas County, located in northeast Ohio, already had many immigrants from Switzerland and Germany, with several churches and newspapers using the German language. On 24 July 1845, John I purchased a 50 acre farm (part of the SW quarter of the NW quarter of Sec 12, TS 7, RG 2) near the town of New Philadelphia in Warwick Township, that was worth $700 in 1850. On 6 December 1845, he sold 21 acres of this farm to two of his sons, John II and Nicholas, who then, 5 years later, sold it back to their father on 20 December 1850.
