    • George A. BAGHURST's memoirs state her birthday as 20 Oct 1791. However I am using the extract from the family Bible, which states 14 May 1791, based on her baptismal record of 18 May 1791. - W. Winston COCHRANE IV, 2013

      Maria was illegitimate based on her baptismal record, and was given her mother's surname, HILL. The Bastardy Papers from Ticknall, recording the father as responsible for financial support, lists William RICHDALE, Jr. as her father.

    • Maria's mother married John HOPE in 1794 when Maria was 3 years old, and John and Mary HOPE had several children. In records after her mother's marriage, and after Maria's own marriage in 1813 to James BAGHURST, Sr., Maria's maiden surname is sometimes recorded as HOPE. There was no legal or formal adoption process at that time. [3, 12, 13]

      1. Artifact-Bible Extract-Hill & Baghurst Families: Maria born 14 May 1791 in Ticknall, Derbyshire. Says she was disinherited from the family of Lord Hill from Shropshire (*).

      2. Memories-George Baghurst, Jr.: Maria born 20 Oct 1791 at Ticknall, Derbyshire. Daughter of Lord Hill of Shrewsbury, Shropshire (*). Date incorrect due to christening record below.

      3. Church of England Parish Registers, Derbyshire (FamilySearch): Maria Hill christened 18 May 1791 in Ticknall. Supports the birth date in #1. Illegitimate birth. Mother's name Mary Hill. No father listed. Maria is given her mother's surname of Hill.

      4. Yesterdays Journey, Bastardy Papers, Ticknall, B9: Identifies William Richdale, Jr. as the father of Mary Hill's illegitimate female child born in 1791.

      * Unable to confirm. Very doubtful. Probably written to cover up her illegitimate birth.
