    • When she emigrated, Kreuznach, on the Nach river, was in the German state of Hesse. Following World War II, the town name is Bad Kreuznach, and is located in the county of Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz in German). 1854 was the peak year for German immigration, estimated to be 250,000, an average of almost 700 per day that year. The total estimate for the 1800s is 3 million. In the 1840s and 1850s there were so many Germans who were financially destitute, that societies were set up with government support to aid emigrants with advice and money for passage to the United States. In doing so, the German state welfare costs and their associated taxes were reduced.

  • Notes
    • Charlotta must have divorced Karl HERMANN, or he died, and Charlotta married Lorenz ARMBRUSTER, with the events occurring between 1854 and 1857. So far, these records, probably in Philadelphia, have not been found.

The baptismal record in 1861 for Charlotte's children, Anna ARMBRUSTER and John ARMBRUSTER with her second husband, list Johann and Johannette SCHEFFLING as the Godparents. Their relationship is unknown, but they may have been Charlotte's brother and sister-in-law.
