- In 1943 Bob quit his job at the Camden newspaper, took all their savings and bought a truck, and went to Uniontown, PA to haul coal as an independent driver. He was to send for his family after he located a house to live in. Ethel received letters for months saying he couldn't find housing. He also did not send any money, and the bank foreclosed on their house in New Jersey forcing Ethel and the children to move in with her parents. Ethel's father became irate, and he and his sons, Henry and George, went to Uniontown to see what the problem was. They found Bob living fairly well with a former babysitter, and a new baby boy. John LANDOLT offered to help Ethel get a divorce, but she was afraid the children would be placed in foster homes as she was unable to support them. John Landolt then gave Bob an ultimatum to find a house for his family, or else. He did, and Ethel and the four children moved to Uniontown. When the war ended in 1945, the coal companies took back their returning drivers, and the independent drivers, including Bob, lost their work. The family returned to New Jersey to live with Ethel's retired parents who were in their 70s, in what must have been a very uncomfortable situation, both physically and emotionally. [4]
