Military Service Civil War, Union forces, as a Private [1, 8, 9, 10, 11]
Along with his brothers James and John, Robert enlisted in the Kentucky 7th Volunteer Infantry Regiment for 3 years on 26 Aug 1861 in London, KY at age 26, and was enrolled into Company K. This regiment was organized at Camp Dick Robinson (KY) on 22 Sep 1861, and had its first engagement in his native Laurel County in the Battle of Camp Wildcat (KY), 21 Oct 1861. He was first reported absent on a sickness furlough 30 Apr 1862, and returned home. He continued on this status until Jul 1863 when he was listed as absent without leave. When this regiment mustered out 5 Oct 1864, he was reported as deserting in Feb 1862.
However, a Notation from the Adjutant General's Office dated 17 Sep 1888 states "All charges of absent without leave and desertion against this man are removed. He was absent sick from December 8, 1861 to September 18, 1863 when he was admitted to Genl Hospt Lexington, KY with varicose veins and sent to Camp Nelson September 29, 1863. Admitted to Conval. Camp (Camp Distribution) Camp Nelson KY and transferred to 17th Co. 2nd Batt. I.C. [Invalid Corps] ____ 84th Co. 2nd Batt. I.C. [Invalid Corps] and Co. K 23rd Reg. I.C. [Invalid Corps] and 84th Co. 2nd Batt. V.R.C. [Veteran Reserve Corps] Oct. 16th 1863." He was discharged 21 Jul 1864.
